Harmony Place Monterey has a one of a kind approach to treatment.
Harmony Place Monterey is unique. Since hospital stays tend to be relatively short, and residential programs often focus on symptom stabilization, clients don’t have the opportunity to work on the deeper issues such as post-traumatic stress, abuse, neglect, social anxiety, and intimacy. What is missing from the continuum of care is partial hospitalization with life coaching, therapeutic community with peer support, and the option for transitional living. Harmony Place Monterey was created to meet this need.
We focus on a small number of clients in a safe, intimate milieu with a 2 to 1 staff ratio. Being able to offer a more affordable treatment with a longer length of stay, clients are able to make significant changes in their lives, allowing for a relief of depression, anxiety, obsessive and addictive symptoms.
Specializing in trauma resolution therapies for combat veterans, sexual abuse and childhood neglect combined with optimal psychiatric medication as well as family and couples work, individuals receive comprehensive and holistic treatments.
Specialty treatments include targeted therapies for addictions such as alcohol, drug abuse, anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, internet sexuality, and mental health issues such as unipolar and bipolar depression and phobic anxiety. With individualized treatment three times a week as well as sessions as needed with the psychiatrist, dietitian, and occupational therapist, clients have the benefit of a comprehensive treatment team. We also work closely with the referring therapists and are available to consult for after care.
Our experience Is that clients benefit from certain interventions more than others. We therefore offer DBT (Dialectical Behavior therapy), Cognitive Reprocessing, Relapse Prevention, Refuge Recovery, Internal Family Systems, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Sexual Arousal Reconditioning, Imago, Cottman Relational therapies, and Affect Accelerated Therapy, and Psychodrama/Improv.

Harmony Place Monterey is standing by for you.
My experience at Harmony Place Monterey was absolutely positive and I am a stronger, more emotionally aware and healthier person because of my time there. I saw Mark and Lori in individual sessions and am incredibly grateful for their genuine care. I respect their abilities as therapists. They are terrific! I have been to several treatment programs for my eating disorder and this is the first time I have truly felt optimistic about my recovery in the long term.
Mark Schwartz and Lori Galperin helped me immensely. The trauma therapy was incredible. At the time I attended the groups at Harmony Place I already had several years sober. The groups allowed me to access problem areas that I never knew existed. I would recommend this program to anyone, but especially to those who have already tried other programs and are still struggling. The program is comprehensive, well designed, and effective. applaud the addition of the life coaching component that helps recovering people during that very delicate transition period from treatment back into society. Monterey is a wonderful environment for recovery and a nice place to stay post, treatment.
Dr. Schwartz is extremely knowledgeable in the areas of treatment he offers. compassionate and caring. A gifted and talented therapist and a wonderful person.
I came to Harmony Place Monterey with severe depression. The entire staff was excellent and very caring. I was finally able to go deeper work on my childhood trauma. Since then, I have been remarkably better and made significant changes to my life!! I highly recommend the knowledgeable staff at Harmony Place.

I believe the step to find a counselor is challenging for many people. Some continue to hope that the painful circumstances they're in will just pass and tomorrow will be better - until it isn't. Some are reluctant to trust their deep emotions and details about their troubled relationships with a "stranger". Some are just scared. I sought Mark for help with a troubled marriage and a lost sense of self. I had worked on both, alone, for a year, yet and found myself just repeating unproductive patterns and feeling empty. Mark's approach was direct, yet nurturing. His questions were spot-on and provided insightful guidance for me to learn more about myself. His environment became a refuge to engage in quiet, thoughtful exploration, a safe place where he made me do the hard-developmental work while encouraging me to accept my true self. If he were still in my city, I would seek him out again, both for his professional expertise and just his good company.
I have known and worked with Dr. Mark Schwartz for over 25 years. Beginning his work in sex therapy, he has expanded his knowledge and training throughout the years to include disorders of attachments, sexual addictions, and eating disorders; he brings a wealth of experience to work. He has always been a brilliant thinker and he is an excellent therapist. In his warmth, compassion, insight, and optimism, he encourages individuals to work toward the best expression of themselves. As a phenomenal educator, his lectures are captivating, learned, and eclectic. Mark is a man of many talents and will bring excellent skills to his new endeavor at Harmony Place Monterey.
Lori Galperin gave me my life. She is intuitive, extraordinarily bright, kind and steadfast. She knows how to work to release underlying trauma that cripples her clients' lives. I had been the patient of some of America's preeminent psychiatrists and psychologists but became increasingly more frustrated and miserable. It wasn't until I worked with Lori that I was able to go deep into my heart and formation to discover the reasons for my pain and suffering and to get beyond self-hatred. Lori can be trusted, and she will stand by you no matter how challenging or excruciating the inner work has to be. Anybody lucky enough to be in treatment with Lori is blessed.
I met Lori in 1997 when I was about to give up on therapy because I couldn't find someone to work with who really understood me. When I met Lori, I knew right away that I could trust her. When I would talk to her about my past life experiences, she seemed to understand what was going on with me internally better than I did. She is, in my opinion, the best therapist anyone could hope to work with. Since working with Lori, I have been able to recover from quite a few different self-destructive addictions in my life and I will forever be grateful to her for that.
I first want to thank you for saving my life and allowing me to live again. I was dying from PTSD and anorexia but know I have my health back with your support and generosity. The personalized therapy and support were amazing, you both guided me through a tough process to be able to get past the PTSD, anorexia, shame, and guilt. The IFS and group therapy model was incredible in helping me to process my trauma, being in acceptance rather than minimizing and denning. I truly never thought I would ever be able to function again in society after being tortured for months on end but with your guidance I was able to find my innate self again, able to be at a point to stand on my own two feet and be a productive member of society, I thought I would live the rest of my life in living hell and my own personal prison. The compassion and generosity in the program and ongoing since I left the program is more than I could have ever expected, so much more than even my family of origin provides. I am also very thankful for the group support you both cultivate among patients that gives ongoing support daily that is invaluable.
Dr. Schwartz is an inspired pioneer in his field - intellectually brilliant, emotionally authentic, and ethically impeccable. I've never met a more dedicated advocate for the health and healing of one's clients. With wide-ranging expertise that includes relationships, addictions, trauma and eating disorders, patients can count on world-class therapy. If I were asked for a referral, there isn't anybody I would trust more.
